Red Rock River Run/Cookout

8/24/2002

Mother nature must have been in a good mood. The temperature wasn't too hot, the wind wasn't whipping sand in our faces, and the rain didn't come until late Saturday night. Dennis Robertson lead one run and Mark Ford lead the other. With 30 or 32 vehicles two runs sounded better. One group would go South and the other one would go North. We left Red Rock State Park about 9:30AM and drove 7 miles to the North Canadian River. One group went south, and the other went North, with 16 assorted vehicles each.

We found some deep holes of water, banks to climb, and sand bars to play on. Dennis found out rice wagons can't float and Shane's toy found some good banks to climb. Samurai's may be small, but in quick sand they go down very fast. I didn't think tow points were real important until I was trying to hook Robert's winch line on under the mud. Now I am a very firm believer in them.  My clothes did come clean on the second washing. All had a good time and no real carnage occurred. We headed back to the Bridge to begin the afternoons Fun Day events. A timed off-road course was laid out in the sand hills with plenty of deep sand and tricky turns. The surprise winner was a brand new stock crewcab Toyota Tacoma with full family crew aboard!  Congratulations David & Karla Loessin. Next was the Sand Drags. Josh Ham did a great job putting this together and flagged off one pair after another till he could hardly raise his arm. Great fun and some good races. The unseasonably cool start to the day was over and everyone was ready to cool off so the group headed back to Red Rock Canyon State Park where Neil Dorsey had reserved the big pavillion. Dale had the coals fired up and was cooking a heap of his famous chili, hotdogs, hotlinks and sausages. Shane had the Ice cream frozen, and the feast began.

After dinner we gave out the trophies for the winners and had the drawing for the prizes.

I would like to say a big Thank You to Mark Ford and Dennis Robertson for leading the runs, to Robert , Christine and Dale for bringing the food and  hauling a lot of gear and  to Billie, Janita, Josh and every one who helped make this a successful and fun day.. I hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as I did. See you at the next meeting.
