Clayton Area
Rough Canyon (Green Acres)
February 21-22, 2004
Clayton early Saturday morning. Breakfast was good , as usual, and I recommend
the pancakes. The weather was great, thank goodness! After breakfast we met at
Steve’s shop for safety inspection and discussed where we were going. Next stop
was the shop near the entrance to Rough Canyon or as some are calling it Green
Acres, to pay the fee. Members present were Jim &Juanita Mongold, Joe & Jeanie
Dobson, Phil Bargman, Ken & Mary Alice Moore, Gene Wilson, Larry & Hunter Long,
and Dale &Tanja Williams. This was to be a day of running some new trails that
the Dallas club had cut and Mike Green had told us that they were challenging
and tight. We should have known what to expect by this comment. The very first
trail we ran was Cakewalk and it was rated a 4+. Ken was designated leader and
tried the gnarly entrance from an awkward spot on the road. Instant high center
on the front diff with no more forward motion. According to Joe, Phil, and Gene
we weren’t even officially on the trail, but I would call it 50/50. The front of
their Toyota was on the trail and the rear was on the road. After a little
goodhearted kidding we were off to see what CakeWalk was all about. I’m here to
tell you it isn’t a cake walk! I want to meet the guy who named that trail. It
is quite a challenge for vehicles with less than 40 inch tires. We spent ½ the
time doing a lot of rock moving and tree trimming. I’m thinking we could have
qualified for the brick mason’s union. Needless to say the big tire boys had a
much easier time. After reaching the top we tried a trail named (g or 8), not
sure which. It was a trail rated 3+. The obstacles were fun but the tight trees
dampened our spirits somewhat. We had left the chainsaws behind this trip, and
everyone’s arms were tired of using the one bowsaw. Next we tried a trail named
Walk in the Park, Wench needed. Mary Alice and I wondered about the spelling. It
was close to right. You needed a Wench and a WINCH. Every one wanted that one to
be over after about 150 yards into it. Phil and Gene continued on and the rest
of us turned around. Steve is a wonderful spotter and we were glad to have him
along, Plus he keeps Joe in line when Jeannie is not along. Did I mention
Offcamber? I should have. Throw Offcamber in with TREES and some of the largest
and meanest rocks around and it describes most of our day. To finish the day we
ran the Trailchaser trail we had cut in January. It was fun and a little less
challenging than the previous trails and we were ready to head back to town for
food and rest. We met some of the people we were on the trail with at dinner. I
enjoyed seeing kids with their parents. Kids learn by example and the teamwork
that went into getting everyone down from the trail that day was a great life
lesson. In all we had changed 2 tires, trimmed some trees, moved some rocks, and
winched some, but it was fun. Gene had to let us all know Phil had to use his
winch close to the top of Wench/Winch trail. That really made his day. We ended
the day with a group of men talking axles, gears, and what works. I’m happy we
chose the Trailchasers.
